Nasal hair can be unsightly and irritating. After having rhinoplasty, many patients notice an increase in the appearance of nasal hair, which becomes somewhat bothersome.
Your rhinoplasty has nothing to do with the growth of your nasal hair. Even normally, nose hairs tend to peek out from the nostrils, unless you trim them or use other nasal hair removal techniques.
If you’re noticing more nasal hair after having rhinoplasty, it’s because the shape of your nose has changed. Tip rotation leads to greater exposure of nasal hair, which is why you see more of it. Your nasal hair growth has not accelerated due to the rhinoplasty.
Many patients find this problematic. However, remember, that it’s just your normal nose hair peeking out. Only the upward lift of the nose has exposed them to a greater extent than before. You may notice more nasal hair as a result of the swelling that occurs after rhinoplasty. However, it will go away after some time. That does not mean that your nose hair will stop showing.
After having rhinoplasty, you’ll have stitches. There is going to be a certain recovery period which can vary between patients. You are strongly advised against using any nasal hair removal technique as the surgical wound is sensitive and delicate after the surgery. You can easily irritate the skin and even rip apart the stitches and bleed by applying extreme pressure through, for instance, waxing. Do not try anything until your skin is completely healed.
Other than waxing, you also shouldn’t try shaving, trimming, or plucking your nose hair. If you tweeze hair and the pores get blocked, which is quite possible, you can get painful boils.
Your nasal hair actually plays the role of filtering the hair you breathe in. The hair traps germs and dust particles so that you can inhale clean air. The hair protruding from the tip of your nose trap the larger particles and the hair in the back of the nose filter mucus. Plucking the nasal hair can increase your risk of getting an infection. Since you’re more vulnerable right after the surgery, you should practise caution.
You should wait for a few months, after which you can discuss some nasal hair removal techniques with your surgeon. You need to ask him/her if they’re safe to perform before going ahead with them. Sometimes, it’s okay to use an electric trimmer or bleaching cream to reduce the appearance of nasal hair hanging out of your nose. But always ask the doctor before using any of these nasal hair removal methods.
At least wait until your swelling has subsided. It can take around 8 months for the swelling to go away in some patients. However, it is not always the case. There are many variations. Each patient is unique. Throughout the recovery period, be very gentle around the nose area. And, importantly, follow our provided aftercare instructions at all costs.
